Turkey Tolson Tjupurrula
(*ca. 1943-2001)

Turkey Tolson Tjupurrula wurde um 1943 einige Kilometer östlich von Haasts Bluff geboren. Zuvor zog seine Familie zwischen dem ihr zugehörigen Land um Walungurru (Kintore) und der Missionsstation Hermannsburg (heute: Ntaria) hin und her. Im Rahmen der Assimilationspolitik der australischen Regierung wurden viele indigene Australier in Reservate gezwungen. Als eine der letzten solcher Siedlungen entstand Papunya, offiziell 1961 eröffnet, in die Turkey Tolson Tjupurrulas Familie 1959 kurz nach seiner ersten Initiation gebracht wurde. Der spätere Künstler arbeitete dort als Bauarbeiter und in der Gemeindeküche. 1983 zog er zurück nach Walungurru (Kintore), lebte danach auf der südöstlich davon gelegenen Außenstation Yuwalki, die zu dem ihm zugehörigen Land gehört, und noch später wieder in Walungurru. Turkey Tolson Tjupurrula war einer der jüngsten innerhalb der Gruppe von Künstlern, die die neue australische Kunstbewegung in Papunya 1971 begründete. Ab 1985 war er zehn Jahre lang Vorsitzender von Papunya Tula Artists, der ältesten, 1972 gegründeten Künstlerkooperative. 1979 gewann er das Artist-in-Residence-Stipendium des Flinders University Art Museum in Adelaide. Die erste von mehreren Einzelausstellungen hatte er 1993 in der Haywood Gallery in London.
