Book Review

The portraits of over 80 artists, from young and obscure to elderly and famous, are very sensitively selected from the collected work of months of trips to art centres and out bush. Contrasting to the monochrome portraits taken in the countryside, or at work on a painting, or standing relaxed against a wall, are colourful paintings by each of the artists, captured in excellent detail. Outside of the scope of the book , unfortunatley, is any hint of information about the artists except their names: they are considered as ageless, without location, without history. The artists seem to be themselves works of art in the eyes of the photographer, archived on film. This lack of information si very regretable, because the few pages of diary-like description of some of the author's trips show that he has an excellent eye for detail, friendly approach, and a close relationship with many of the artists. The book can be recommended highly as a means to see the faces and look into the eyes of artists whose works now hang in major international collections and museums.
