Art works by Eunice Napanangka Jack and Narputta Nangala Nugadai

Narputta Nangala Jugadai was born in 1933 near MacDonald Lake (Karrkurutinytja). The area lies to the west of Kintore, on the edge of the Western  Desert. This is the land of the artist and the theme of many of her paintings. The wavey lines in the paintings represent the hills (Puli) und sandhills (Tali) that surround the huge saltlake area. The dry lake bed itself is represented in the paintings by one or more multi-coloured bands of varying width. For Narputta Nangala Jugadai and her family it is a sacred land, that they had to leave in the middle of the 1930s. The act of painting is for the artist a way of upholding her spiritual responsibilities and care for the land, as well as for the laws of the Aboriginal People that are connected with it.

The artist lives now at Haasts Bluff, also on the edge of the Great Western Desert. Narputta Nangala Jugadai began her artistic work in 1992. While her earlier works were executed in the dots style, she changed her technique radically within only a few years and developed her own typical style of dynamic coordination of line elements. Her paintings are identifed by an exacting graphical composition, in a reduced palette, which allows her however a wide spectrum of expression.

In 1977 Narputta Nangala Jugadai had her first solo exhibition and won the most important national art prize which is especially for Aboriginal artists. Her paintings have been shown in several international and very many Australian exhibitions.

Also the art works of Eunice Napanangka Jack, born in 1940, develop the theme of land. For example, one of her works on show represents the area of Docker River (Kuruuldu), south west of Haasts Bluff, the land of her mother. Other paintings show the Tjukurrla of the land at the boundary between the Northern Territory and West Australia, that belong to her father. The two areas are geophysically quite different, and this is reflected in the paintings. Around Docker River are kilometer-long sand hills and the artist represents them in her well-known short bold strokes. The land of her father contains many small caves, that often contain permanent water, providing a green cornucopia in the middle of the sand-dune country. Such important sources of water and life show in her paintings as small round coloured areas.

The artist began her artistic work with the opening of the Ikuntji Women's Centre om 1992 in Haasts Bluff west of Alice Springs. Previously she had assisted the artist Gideon Tjupurrula (ca. 1930-1996). Her father, Tutuma Tjapangarti, was one of the artists to found the Papunya artists' cooperative in 1972.
