Biographics

Birthdate: ca. 1935 Ungoola (Bushy Park)
Language Group: Anmatyerre

Lindsay Bird Mpetyane is a speaker for the Anmatyerre people and was born on the Bushy Park Station, from whose owner (Jim Bird) he took part of his name. In his early years he worked on farms as a stockman. His Aboriginal name is Artola Art Nanaka Yunga Areteca. He lives together with his wife Pansy Petyarre, also an artist, and his three daughters in the Utopia area. As one of the few male participants, he was involved in the famous batik project at Utopia, the artworks of which toured Australia and overseas from 1977 to 1987. Lindsay Bird Mpetyane was instrumental in making acrylic paintings more important at Utopia. His artworks are characterised by great precision and fine colour combinations. After Emily Kame Kngwarreye, he was one of the first Aboriginal artists to have solo exhibitions.
