The quality of the work was immediately recognised by the award in 1993 of the Northern Territory´s Women´s Fellowhip. In 1997 she was awarded two futher prizes, the Fishers Ghost Art Award in the section for Aboriginal art as well as, in the 14th National Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Art Award, the award in the section Open Painting. Her brothers Riley Major and George Tjangala are also well-known artists. Paintings
Karrkurutinytja (Lake MacDonald), 1996 Acrylic on linen, 69,5 x 149,5 cm The large white stripe in the centre of the painting represents Lake MacDonald, while the smaller shapes represent sandhills and places where people have been digging for sand goanna and carpet snake. Lampintja, 1996 Acrylic on linen, 136,5 x 76 cm Lampintja is close to Karrkurrutinytja (Lake MacDonald), where Narputta Nangala was born. The tjukurrpa is about two Nakamarra´s digging for sand goanna all over the place, which explains the landscape´s appearance. Sometimes the imagery relates directly to the old sand goanna (kurrkati), who lived in the middle of the saltlake Purrpurrpa. He used to come out and sun himself, leaving his tracks on the slippery rocks. This story was passed on to Narputta Nangala by her father and grandparents who used to travel everywhere around Kintore and Docker River by foot. |
