Janganpa Jukurrpa (Possum Jukurrpa), 1999 Acrylic on canvas, 120 x 76 cm The country associated with this Dreaming is Mungapunju, a hill south of Yuendumu. In the Dreamtime a large family of Janganpa (Possums) travelled east to Yukurudyi. They then travelled back to Mungapunju. The possums lived in holloiw trees hunting nocturnally and carrying their young on their backs. The circles represent the camps of the Janganpa (i.e. the trees) and the concentric circle is Mungapunju. The curved lines are the tracks left by the possum´s tail. The E-shapes are their footprints (wirliya). Japaljarri and Jungarrayi men and Napaljarri and Nungarryi women are the custodians of this Dreaming. |
